NORTH PIER SUPERIOR ENTRY

AMI was hired to assist with quality control for the rehabilitation of the North Pier of the Superior Entry, located in Superior, WI. The rehabilitation consisted of the installation of new steel sheet pile (SS) that had a protective coating applied on the exterior of the sheets. The coating was installed to protect the SSP from the microbiological influenced corrosion (MIC) that has been documented within the Duluth/ Superior harbor. The sheet pile was installed around the historical seawall and secured with and internal wale and tieback system that utilized pretensioned bolts. AMI worked with the Contractor to determine the proper torque values to achieve the specified bolt tensions and conducted weekly inspections to verify that the pretensioned bolts were being installed according to the plans, specifications and manufacturers recommendations.

AMI was also responsible for performing daily inspections and testing during the coating application process for the new steel sheet pile. AMI’s NACE/ SSPC certified coating inspector was responsible for conducting surface profile tests, dry film thickness tests, adhesion testing, and holiday testing to ensure that the specified coating was being installed in accordance with the plans, project specifications and Manufacturers recommendations. AMI worked directly with the client to develop a quality control plan that meet the needs of the USACE.
