FORD LOCK & DAM NO. 1
AMI performed an underwater inspection of the powerhouse of Lock & Dam No.1, formally named known as the Ford Dam, along the Mississippi River between Minneapolis & St. Paul, MN. The scope of work included a visual inspection of the intake structure and retaining wall on the upstream side of the powerhouse as well as the draft tubes, discharge apron and concrete walls on the downstream side.
To complete the inspection of the draft tubes, AMI utilized a five-man ADCI certified engineering dive team. This inspection method required two-divers in the water at once in order to meet OSHA, ADCI and US Army Corp of Engineers safety requirement for penetration diving. To access the elements on the downstream side of the powerhouse, AMI utilized a crane equipped with a man-basket which lowered the divers into the water. Ladders we also placed along the inspection area for a secondary egress in case of an emergency. The inspection was also completed during the winter months when visibility is more favorable.
The results of the inspection were summarized in a report that included structural drawings to provide a visual representation of what was documented during the inspection. The inspection report also included recommendations for future sustainability of the facility.
